SBC Announces New Emerging Entities Services Division

SBC Intern Among the First Graduates of MACPA's Student Leadership Academy

Top Accounting students from Maryland colleges were selected to participate in MACPA’s first ever Student Leadership Academy. SBC’s own Muhammad Owais was selected from a pool of talented professionals to participate. The program introduces motivated students to the professional world through networking and development activities. Participants were recognized at MACPA’s Women to Watch breakfast on September 23, 2015.

SBC Supports the Baltimore Community through Volunteering

June is Community Service Month at SBC when we stress the importance of supporting the community in which we live and serve. This year, 20 SBC volunteers prepared and packaged meals for Moveable Feast. The Baltimore-based program, now in its 25th year, provides nutritious meals to community members coping with both poverty and chronic illnesses. After a day of service, SBC employees packaged more than 500 meals for delivery. 

Intern Season is on the Horizon 

SBC’s summer intern season will kick off on June 8, 2015. Each summer, SBC welcomes a new “class” of interns to the firm. This year’s class includes 14 interns from University of Baltimore, Morgan State University, Towson University, Bowie State University, University of Maryland, Delaware State University, University of Maryland Baltimore County, and Howard University. SBC’s internship program incorporates in-depth training, field experience, and team building events to develop our interns into confident, effective professionals.

Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work Day

SBC hosted Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work Day on April 23, 2015. Eight children were welcomed into the office where they learned about auditing, teamwork, and various roles and their significance to the firm. Children were treated to a presentation, tour, and hands-on activities. The day culminated with a celebration of talents. Each child decorated a paper leaf with their name, age, and personal strength and added the piece to a group tree representative of SBC’s logo.

SB & Company Welcomes Pat Potter

SB & Company (SBC) is pleased to announce the addition of Patrick (Pat) Potter, a new partner, to the firm. Pat joins SBC with more than 28 years providing accounting and auditing services to SEC companies including retail, distribution, manufacturing, construction, managed healthcare, and financial services. He began his career with “Big 4” firm KPMG and furthered his experience at Arthur Andersen, LLP and Ernst & Young, LLP.

SBC Celebrates 10 Year Anniversary withEmployees and Alumni Contributing to a 10 Year Time Capsule

On April 1, 2015 SB & Company, LLC held a reception for its employees and alumni to celebrate its 10 year anniversary and officially seal a time capsule to be opened in another 10 years. Employees and alumni gathered to watch Monique Booker ceremoniously close and lock the SBC time capsule containing a variety of firm items predicted to be outdated by 2025. Among the items were a calculator, typewriter, and slinky.

State of Maryland Selects SB & Company to Perform State Audit for 5 More Years

The State of Maryland Board of Public Works approved SB & Company (SBC) to be reappointed as the auditor for the State of Maryland and most of its component units, including the University of Maryland. The reappointment is for 5 years beginning with the fiscal year 2015 and ending with fiscal year 2019.

Thanks to all of our clients and staff, SB & Company, LLC (SBC) will be celebrating our ten year anniversary on February 1, 2015. SBC was founded in 2005 by three former Big 4 partners with a desire to build a firm made up of diverse people to serve diverse clients.  It was hard to imagine as we were developing our business plan in my home that this idea would grow into such a successful business venture. I want to take a moment to recognize and thank everyone for their contributions to our success and also for believing in our vision and making it a reality.

Without the support and dedication of our people (both past and present), the firm would not have achieved this level of success. Every person who has walked through the doors of our firm has contributed to the success in some way. No matter the size of their contribution, each individual's enthusiasm, support and dedication has been instrumental to our success. From our first employees who took a risk by leaving their careers elsewhere to join a small firm without a guarantee of success, to those who have joined us within this last year passing on opportunities to join Big 4 firms or large corporations, the people who joined SBC all took a chance on our firm and believed in our vision. Your trust and confidence in what we could achieve has been a daily motivator for us to continue to reach for greater success and we strive daily to repay you for what you entrusted in us.

We are also grateful to our clients who trusted in us when we were a fledgling first year firm that we could deliver them the same quality and service they received at larger accounting firms but at a more competitive price. It is through their referrals also that we have grown by leaps and bounds during these first ten years. Their demands, challenges and feedback have pushed us to continuously raise the bar and to set our standards higher. Our success would not be complete without the support of our clients. They have assisted us in a way that most marketing mediums cannot achieve. From our first client to our newest client, you are the reason we are in business and why we are here. We will continue to strive to hit the bullseye for you each and every time!

I would also like to thank the countless mentors who have lent an ear and their expertise to us as we took the firm from an idea to a tangible experience.  It is through these wonderful relationships that we have grown and attribute our success.

SBC plans to keep the momentum moving and to continue our growth as we look out to the next ten years. We will continue to invest in our people and technology to ensure we continue to provide the best experiences for them which will be passed on to our client. With your continued support, I am certain the next ten years will be as good as, if not better than, our first ten. As we celebrate this 10th anniversary milestone, the firm will be hosting events throughout the year many of which you will be invited to attend including an office open house. We will communicate the various events with you as details are finalized.

Graylin Smith Joins Panel of Government Leaders at MACPA Conference

Graylin Smith, CPA and Managing Partner of SBC, spoke at the Maryland Association of Certified Public Accountants A&A Conference on December 1, 2014. He joined the panel of state and local government experts which included Dean Kenderdine, Executive Director of the Maryland State Retirement and Pension System, David A. Vaudt, Chair of GASB, and Helen Holton, CPA and Baltimore County Council Member.

The conference addressed a live audience at the Sheraton of Columbia and was broadcast nationally over the internet. The panel discussed the implementation of the new standards, GASB 67 and GASB 68, and provided guidance for some of the implementation issues.

Graylin Smith Addresses Education CFOs

Gray Smith, CPA and Bill Seymour of SBC, presented on a panel with Dean Kenderdine, the Executive Director of Maryland State Retirement and Pension System at a meeting of Chief Financial Officers of the Board of Education on December 12, 2014. The meeting was held at the Anne Arundel Public Schools headquarters in Annapolis, Maryland. The panel was on the adoption of GASB Nos. 67 and 68 and how they would apply to the Boards of Education in the State of Maryland.
